friends enjoying a night out

You just received your new Invisalign aligners and are looking to celebrate investing in a better smile! All your friends are ready to take you for a fun night out, but you wonder if eating and drinking will affect your new trays. You’re looking forward to the short treatment time and want to make sure you don’t do anything to jeopardize that. Taking care of your new aligners is easier than you thought. Just follow these 4 tips below and get ready to celebrate a straighter smile and a more confident you!

Rinse Your Aligners Often

Each time you take your aligners out throughout the night, you’ll want to be sure to rinse them to get rid of any bacteria or food particles. This will keep your gums healthy and avoid any bacteria buildup. Because they’re removable, you can easily sneak away to the bathroom and quickly rinse them under the faucet without a problem.

Take Your Trays Out Before You Eat or Drink

With Invisalign, you won’t have to restrict what you eat or drink. It is important to take out your trays before you consume anything besides water though. Eating with them could cause them to break and lengthen your treatment period while drinking alcohol with them may make them cloudy or stained. Remember that eating and drinking with your trays can not only cause them to discolor, but it can also make them smell unpleasant.

If you decide to drink with them in, it’s best to avoid anything that’s dark in color and stick to white wine, gin, or vodka. Also, try to avoid any sugary mixed drinks and choose tonic or soda water instead. Sugary drinks not only put your teeth at risk of decay, but they can make them feel unpleasant with your aligners in. It’s also vital to remember to brush your teeth after drinking anything besides water if you’re able to. If you’re not able to do this, be sure to rinse your mouth out with water to avoid food particles and sugar attaching to your teeth.

Cleaning Your Teeth at the End of the Night

Be sure to remember to brush your teeth once you get home. Brushing and flossing regularly helps prevent plaque and bacteria buildup underneath the aligners. If you slack on your hygiene routine, it could cause your oral health to decline and result in cavities and gum irritation.

Cleaning Your Aligners at the End of the Night

Before you’re ready to throw in the towel for the night and plop onto your bed, don’t forget to clean your aligners to keep them from getting smelly and prevent bacteria buildup. You can do this by using a special Invisalign cleaning solution, denture cleaner, or a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar for 15 minutes. This will keep them from becoming cloudy and sanitize them. In addition to soaking, you’ll want to gently brush them using clear anti-bacterial soft-soap.

Taking care of your Invisalign trays will ensure that your oral health is up-to-par and can reduce your risk of developing cavities or infections during your treatment. If you have any questions or would like additional tips on how to keep your mouth healthy while undergoing treatment, be sure to visit your dentist!
